How NAPA’s People Buddies support growth, engagement and well-being
At NAPA, we’re big believers in our management model, self-management. In self-management, the idea is that people thrive when they are trusted and have the freedom and responsibility to steer their own growth, learning, and well-being. But that doesn’t mean anyone has to do it alone.
To support this culture, we’ve introduced the NAPA People Buddy – a peer-based support role designed to help our people reflect, grow, and feel supported, both professionally and personally.

What exactly is a People Buddy?
A People Buddy is a trusted colleague – someone you choose – who’s there for personal one-on-one conversations. They don’t give you instructions or tell you what to do. Instead, they take a coaching-style approach: asking the right questions, encouraging reflection, and helping you think things through. It’s about supporting people without hierarchy – just honest, human conversations in a psychologically safe space.
Helping people grow – their way
In a self-managed workplace like ours, learning isn’t something you do once a year. It’s ongoing, personalized, and self-driven. People Buddies help their fellow Naparians define their goals, explore development opportunities, and find resources that align with their personal and professional paths. It’s support that helps people find and stay true to their strengths and build confidence for the road ahead.
Well-being matters, too
Work isn’t just about performance; it’s also about how people feel. The People Buddy is also there to check in on the well-being of the colleague, helping to recognize when extra support might be needed, and creating space for open, honest discussions. It’s one more way we’re making sure NAPA stays a healthy, engaging place to work
Who can become a People Buddy?
Any Naparian who wants to support others can volunteer to be a People Buddy, provided they have the right skills and mindset. We offer training in coaching, psychological safety, and how to hold effective one-on-one conversations. It’s also a great development opportunity for Buddies themselves, helping them grow their communication and leadership abilities.
One option among many
The People Buddy isn’t here to replace other forms of support at NAPA; it’s an addition. Everyone’s growth journey looks different, and we want people to have the freedom to choose the tools and support that work best for them.
A culture that benefits everyone
While the People Buddy is focused on the individual, it also strengthens our entire organization. When people feel supported, they’re more motivated, more engaged, and more likely to stay and grow with the company. It contributes to a culture of trust, feedback, and resilience – all of which are essential in a self-managed workplace.
In short, the People Buddy reflects what we value most at NAPA: putting people first, supporting one another, and creating a workplace where everyone can thrive and enjoy working together.
