Under the EU ETS, shipping companies must surrender allowances for 100% of their emissions from 2027 onwards, based on emissions reported from 2026. The regulation applies to all ships over 5,000 GT calling at EU ports, covering 100% of intra-EU voyages and 50% of international legs. At the same time, CII ratings are pushing operators to continuously improve their vessel efficiency, while FuelEU Maritime will introduce greenhouse gas intensity limits for energy used on board.
