Carnival Maritime FOC Hamburg: Optimizing operations with NAPA

Safety is paramount to what we do from the Carnival Maritime Fleet Operations Center (FOC) in Hamburg. Being part of the world’s largest cruise company, we know how vital the small details are when it comes to the shore-side support of a fleet at scale.

From the FOC we provide 24/7 support to our fleet of more than 30 ships, spanning the Costa, AIDA, and Carnival UK (P&O Cruises UK, and Cunard) brands. We always have two superintendents from our shoreside team on watch. They are prepared to react to any incident that may occur while our ships are at sea. Our vigilance is continuous, and so is our commitment to optimizing the FOC so it best safeguards our crew, passengers and vessels.

The investment into the recent refurbishment of the Hamburg FOC is testament to this, and the center is now ready for action. We have ensured that the department is state-of-the-art. That it is collaborative and future proofed.

With a wall of monitors controllable from workstations, a digital tactical table for group strategizing alongside stakeholders, and an open-plan environment, it really feels years ahead. We have also invested in a simulator that allows us to trial conditions and scenarios, you can see it as a sandbox for our team to prepare, plan and integrate new technology into our system.

Investment in software to match this innovation has always been a priority. These digital tools bolster our capabilities and underpin our reliable, streamlined, and next-generation operations.

NAPA Stability and NAPA Fleet Intelligence

NAPA Stability and NAPA Fleet Intelligence have played a leading role in developing the FOC as a cutting-edge hub for our fleet. NAPA Fleet Intelligence seamlessly connects our FOC to our fleet, providing the essential data that we use daily, and it has significantly reduced our team’s workload. From us being dependent on legacy spreadsheets, with NAPA’s dashboard we can clearly analyze the data that arrives from our vessels in real-time, 24/7.

Understanding our ships’ stability is absolutely vital to ensuring safe operations. NAPA Stability and its corresponding NAPA Fleet Intelligence modules offer us powerful monitoring and analysis tools. Apart from, NAPA Stability onboard, we are specifically using the Stability MonitorStability ComputerFleet View, and Emergency Computer modules from the NAPA Fleet Intelligence platform. These modules combine to give the shore-side team a comprehensive and detailed breakdown of real-time stability conditions, fleet positions, stability calculations.

Real-time access to GM data, displacement, and other stability parameters, has allowed us to instantly identify stability discrepancies, whether it be the ship’s intact stability status, loading conditions at any given momement due to the route it is on or sudden weather conditions. Our shore-side personnel are then able to communicate promptly with the ship’s crew and establish whether there is a genuine operational issue that needs to be rectified, or whether it was a discrepancy with the data.

The dashboard that clearly presents stability data is also popular with our team. Not only is it user-friendly, but it gives us the capability to define safety thresholds, allowing us to proactively identify and address potential stability issues. In terms of passenger and crew safety, this is invaluable ‘foresight’ that gives us the ability to have full situational awareness, plan voyages better and provide assistance before a more serious issue develops.

Stability data also plays a critical role in analyzing tank information, which is automatically recorded and transmitted to our system. These insights enable us to monitor water consumption throughout the voyage, optimize bunkering processes, and pinpoint potential risks associated with specific itineraries.

The modular nature of NAPA Fleet Intelligence software fits perfectly with the fully modular FOC we wanted to develop. We look forward to being able to integrate the latest programmes as NAPA continues to introduce innovative technology and develop its existing portfolio. Carnival Maritime is driving high-standards of safety and marine management, and we need the most up-to-date tools to be able to do this.

Future FOC 2.0

We are excited about the future of the FOC, and the possibilities it, and further upgrades offer us. Voyage optimization and sustainable operations is an area that we want to look at in-depth.

NAPA Fleet Intelligence and NAPA Stability have enabled us to prioritize the vessel’s conditions, safety and stability alongside typical efficiency-led operational parameters. They have allowed us to input stability data into the planning and preparation for the voyage.  Our collaboration with NAPA has unlocked our potential to make a difference from the shore-side, with greater levels of information delivered to the Carnival FOCs in real time, that most importantly supports safe cruising.
