Bore - NAPA collaboration demonstrates environmental and financial value of operational efficiency software

1,000 tonnes of CO2 saved plus 5.8% reduction in fuel
consumption, equivalent to $210,000

Background

Finnish shipping company Bore, part of the Rettig Group, operates a fleet of 18 RoRo and general cargo vessels in the Baltic, North Sea, Biscayan Sea and West-Mediterranean Sea. Testament to its strong environmental values, in 2011 Bore took delivery of the Bore Sea, a RoFlex vessel and the most energy efficient ship in its class.

Proactive in its approach to managing current and future environmental regulations, Bore is always striving to go over and above the minimum requirements. In advance of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) ship energy efficiency management plan (SEEMP) legislation - mandatory from January 2013 – Bore challenged NAPA with enhancing the operational efficiency of the Bore Sea even further and proving the value of its operational efficiency software.

Solution

NAPA for Operations is an electronic system used for planning, monitoring and optimising the ship’s operations. Bore conducted an 89-day sea trial of the NAPA for Operations SEEMP software between April and July 2012 along routes between Cadiz and Naples and Cadiz and Pauillac. The solution from NAPA included:

  • Trim and Displacement Optimisation
  • Voyage Optimisation
  • Speed Pilot
  • Voyage Reporting
  • Real Time Monitoring
  • Office web portal
  • Analytics service

Taking into consideration the ships' characteristics, as well as external factors, NAPA Trim Optimisation assists in operating the ship in optimal trim and displacement with regard to fuel consumption.

NAPA Voyage Optimisation provides the ship with the most efficient speed profile, together with the NAPA Speed Pilot the system controls the ships’ propulsion automatically and enables extremely accurate speed control.

With NAPA Real Time Monitoring, the officers monitor several different factors on board the ship. During and after the voyage, the NAPA systems automatically transmit performance data to shore. The NAPA Office web portal is used in the Bore office for tracking and trending vessel performance. With the NAPA Office web portal it is easy to track and benchmark fuel consumption and operational efficiency.

Results

Results from the sea trial onboard the Bore Sea verified a 5.8% reduction in fuel consumption. This delivered calculated annual fuel savings of 320 tonnes, equivalent to $210,000 per annum.

These savings were achieved through two main contributing factors. The trim optimisation reduced fuel consumption by 0.8%, which translates to $30,000 a year. In addition, speed optimisation and speed control combined reduces fuel consumption by approximately 5%, which equates to $180,000 annually.

“We were exceptionally pleased with the outcome of the initial trial of NAPA for Operations SEEMP systems,” explains Jörgen Mansnerus, VP Marine Management. “We challenged NAPA to prove that an electronic SEEMP could provide measurable and tangible fuel and cost savings to our fleet and the study did just that. During the benchmarking period, we saw that the business-as-usual annual consumption of M/V Bore Sea would be around 5600 tonnes.  Given the 5.8% savings afforded by implementing two elements of the NAPA package, we should see significant financial savings.”

The results from the sea trials convinced Bore to install the enhanced capabilities and feedback systems offered by ClassNK-NAPA-GREEN ship efficiency software aboard its 13,625dwt Ro-Ro vessel, the M/V Bore Song – sister vessel to the Bore Sea.

“The 2012 sea trial of operational software was a significant factor in our decision to choose ClassNK-NAPA GREEN,” concluded Mansnerus. “We are confident that this software is a wise investment that will begin to offer fuel savings aboard this vessel from installation, and proud that we are able to offer this efficiency and lowered fuel spend to the charterers who will reap the benefits.”
